The original Pornstar Martini was conceived in London in 1999 by Douglas Ankrah, at The Lab Bar.
Douglas is one of the world's most respected beverage and bar consultants. He began as a bartender in London where he developed his passion for cocktails. This passion turned into a business in '96 when he founded the London Academy of Bartending at the Atlantic Bar. Here, generations of bartenders are trained in the art of mixology.
Originally, the cocktail was called Maverick Martini. But because of the passion (fruit) in the cocktail, the drink conquered the world as Pornstar Martini. In terms of taste, the Pornstar Martini actually has nothing to do with the world-famous Martini, which is rather bitter in taste. The only thing they have in common? The glass in which the cocktails are served and the class and elegance they exude.
It's (not) in a name
Usually there is a fun or funny story behind the name of a cocktail. Not so with the Pornstar Martini. The name was coined simply to "havea good laugh," as they say in British fashion. They wanted to take customers out of their comfort zone and they succeeded.
Because it is a cheeky name, some bars find it better to put it on the menu as a "Passion Fruit Martini. The cocktail, of course, remains the same.
The taste
Exuding elegance and self-assurance, the drink strikes the perfect balance between vanilla, lime, vodka and passion fruit. This combination makes a deliciously sexy cocktail that passes your tongue like velvet. A real winner in terms of taste and presence.
